Conductor: High-conductivity, plain stranded copper (Class 2 per BS EN 60228:2005) ensures efficient power transmission with minimal energy loss.
Insulation: Materials like Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) insulate each core. XLPE is often preferred for its superior heat resistance (up to 90C continuous operation) and excellent electrical properties.
Bedding: An inner sheathing (often PVC) provides a protective cushion between the insulation and the armour layers, protecting the cores from chafing.
Armour Layer: This is typically galvanized steel wire armour (SWA) for multi-core cables, providing robust protection against crushing, impact, abrasion, and rodent activity. For single-core AC cables, non-magnetic aluminium wire armour (AWA) is used to prevent eddy currents and overheating.
Outer Sheath: A final protective layer, commonly of PVC for general use or Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) for public/enclosed spaces (e.g., hospitals, data centers) to enhance fire safety. The sheath is often UV and moisture-resistant.
Key Features & Benefits
Superior Mechanical Strength: The metal armour offers exceptional protection against physical damage, allowing for direct burial and use in industrial areas without additional conduit.
Environmental Resistance: The robust design and sheathing provide resistance to moisture, chemicals, oils, corrosive substances, and UV radiation, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations.
Enhanced Safety: The armour layer can serve as an additional earth/grounding conductor (Circuit Protective Conductor or CPC), which improves safety by providing a safe path for fault currents and reducing electric shock hazards.
Reliable Performance: High-quality copper conductors ensure stable and efficient power flow, while the overall construction leads to a long operational lifespan and reduced maintenance costs.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding: The metallic armour provides some protection against EMI, which is important for control and telecommunication systems.
Applications
Copper armoured cables are widely used in a variety of demanding environments:
Underground Installations: Suitable for direct burial in soil for power distribution systems and street lighting.
Industrial Facilities: Used to power heavy machinery, control circuits, and power distribution networks in factories and construction sites.
Outdoor and Marine Environments: Ideal for external wiring, power lines, and offshore platforms due to their resistance to weather, moisture, and corrosion.
Commercial and Public Buildings: Employed in hospitals, data centers, and transport hubs where reliable power and enhanced fire safety (with LSZH options) are critical.
